Breakfast Mud: RawJuvinates Organic Super Greens

Green smoothies freak me out.

There I said it. I don’t like the idea of drinking grass; if I want a salad I like it in leaf form with tomatoes and dressing.  I understand that some people do like green smoothies; to them I say ‘too each their own’.
Now that I’ve offended all of the health nuts in the room let’s talk about RawJuvinates Organic Super Greens, a gluten free, organic, vegan green drink mix. I was actually really excited to try this one just to see if all of my misconceptions about blended grass could be proven wrong and maybe I could see the light; the weird green light.
Raw Green Organics  is a company that produces healthy, cleanse/detox products. They are certified organic and vegan and, according to their website, take every precaution to be as environmentally conscious as possible. All words I like to hear! And I’m not even vegan ;P
In their own words:
“At Raw Green Organics, we believe that without our health and planet – we have nothing. It's serious business and we're in the business of making it better. Since our inception we've tried to re-think how to create a business that promotes health and sustainability. It's definitely a work in progress, and there is always more we can do.” -rawgreenorganics.com

So how was the drink?

We’re getting to that, I really want to point out the ingredient list on this one because it was a big deal to Charles and I’m sure will be for anyone buying this(you can see it right on the website) so here we go:
·         Organic Alfalfa Leaf Extract
·         Organic Barley Grass Juice Powder
·         Organic Wheat Grass Fiber
·         Organic Spirulina Powder
·         Organic Spinach Powder
·         Organic Gingko Leaf Powder
·         Organic Berry Flavor
·         Organic Stevia Reb A

Charles isn’t a fan of Stevia; he says it has a weird after taste and is “sickeningly sweet.”  I personally try to avoid things that aren’t sweetened with, well, sugar so I had never had Stevia before today. When I tasted the drink mix (just a bit on my finger) it was very sweet to the point of being too sweet. It didn’t change the fact that it tasted like grass, just grass coated in sweet.

Now here's how we prepared our breakfast smoothie: apple sauce, blue berries, 1 banana, Super Greens. We wanted fruit to help mask the taste of field. All of this (all of it) went into the blender and spun around a bit before we were left with what looked an awful lot like mud. It really wasn’t pretty but it smelled amazing.
It tasted pretty good too; though it was a bit sweet to start with and then had a bit of a bitter finish. There was very little middle ground with this drink but none of us could stop drinking it! It had a bit of a gritty texture from the Super Greens that could not

be blended away, and there was also the problem of the Super Greens clumping like crazy so if you’re going to try this be careful because there will be a few lumps.
The flavor of the greens was not hidden entirely and it added a nice complement to the apple/blueberry/banana monstrosity we’d created. And it was so filling! We each had a small glass and it gave us a good bit of energy and kept us full until lunch. It’s safe to say I will be making mud smoothie more often!
That being said I still don’t like green smoothies. The Super Greens did add a good flavor complement as well as a nice serving of green veggies to our fruit smoothie but I wouldn’t want it on its own.

Final Verdict:  Might buy again. I definitely loved the mud.

Late Night Tea Party! Mighty Leaf and Numi Organics Teas

Last night my roomies and I decided a have a little tea party with some of the delicious teas included in this month’s Conscious Box. It was an experience, let me tell you.
We had 4 kinds of tea; 3 from a company called Mighty Leaf and 1 from Numi Organics. We decided to make Mighty Leafs Organic Spring Jasmine and Organic Mint Mélange as well as the Spinach Chive Savory Tea from Numi Organics. If I’m being honest, none of us were excited about the Spinach Chive tea but Eric manned up and volunteered to take that cup.
Okay I guess I should take this time to tell you a bit about the companies before we get into the actual tea. First up; Mighty Leaf and I think it’s best to let the company speak for itself.
Mighty Leaf Tea was born for the sole purpose of infusing life into an ancient indulgence by creating tea products that reach new heights of quality and innovation.
From the handpicked organic tea blends, to the hand-stitched compostable silken pouch, the common thread that runs through Mighty Leaf is the human touch. A touch that resonates with the artist within the individual and fosters a more sustainable world.
Mighty Leaf Tea supports the fostering of long-term prosperity for artisans and their communities locally, regionally and globally in tea-growing regions through monetary program support. We also promote and encourage sustainable farming and production methods for tea-growing regions around the world through corporate partnerships and sourcing practices.
Mighty Leaf is proud to offer a compostable tea pouch crafted from corn-derived PLA. Our pouches compost in a commercial composting facility. The string and tag are also compostable and do not need to be removed before discarding." Mightyleaf.com

That all sounds amazing if you ask me. Browsing their website I also learned that they offer everything from loose tea to tea cups and mugs, all at reasonable prices. A 15 pouch pack of that Mint Mélange we tried is less than $10 plus shipping, and they carry these adorable little tea pots for about $22! I love me a good tea pot :D

That’s all well and good Tarina but how is their tea?

Okay, okay I’m getting there. So we opened the pack revealing the cutest little tea bags that we then find out are hand sewn and compostable! We were highly impressed and in awe of their adorableness (Is that a word? Microsoft says it is but I’m not sure.)
We steeped the tea for the time recommended on each pack (3 minutes for the Jasmine, 5 for the Mint) and then we tasted. They were amazing.
Yes, amazing. I’m not a fan of mint tea but with 2 sugars even I loved it. And the Jasmine! Oh the Jasmine was the best Jasmine tea any of us had ever had; it was Jasmine tea Uncle Iroh would have been proud of.

Final verdict: Will totally buy again and I highly recommend to any other tea lovers.

 Numi Organics:

“Through thoughtful choices, we are committed to reducing our impact on the planet. By using organic teas in our tea bags, eco-responsible packaging and partnering with green partners to offset carbon emissions, we try and do our best through our supply chain to minimize waste.  We are honored to be recognized through various awards for our efforts. Since most elements of our packaging can be recycled or composted, we ask that you thoughtfully recycle your boxes and compost your tea bags to complete the circle.” -numitea.com

I like the sound of that! Numi Organics is a fair trade business that sells many kinds of tea, including a variety
of savory teas like the one we tried. You can peruse their website because there isn’t a reason for me to repeat it all hear but I can say from what I see they are a good family owned company that produces quality product.

Speaking of their products…Spinach Chive Tea
The smell was horrendous; do NOT get a big whiff of that stuff. It has a very strong vegetable smell though once it started to steep the smell was less strong and easier to handle. If I’m being honest it wasn’t such a horrible smell on its own, I think knowing we were about to drink it made it worse than it actually was. In any case we had to enforce some tea segregation because the smell was clouding the aroma of the mint and Jasmine.
That's the Numi tea on the far left

Once you get past that and taste it…it was pretty bad. But only as a drink; we all agreed it would, as Charles put it, “…make a glorious, glorious soup base.” In fact, once we started thinking of it as soup base and not tea all of the negatives I had sort of went away, even the smell wasn’t as bad.
It’s hard for me to describe the actual taste of things I eat; I’m just not that good at it, so I asked Charles and he said; “More than anything it tasted oniony. It tasted green; vegetale.”
To be fair to Numi one of the uses it lists for this is “as a delicious brew for cooking rice or noodles”, it’s just not for anything but that. Sorry Numi.

Final Verdict: As tea I couldn’t even take another sip. As stock we’re going to buy more tomorrow! Except not really because the organic grocery we went to didn’t have any

New Beginnings

Where to start?

I guess where it all started; my whole life I was pretty much a Yes-man for my family. I lived to please others and accepted my 'quirks' as faults to be mocked. These quirks were thing like not using Styrofoam, wanting the shampoo NOT tested on animals, thinking hunting for sport and factory farming are wrong. Everyone laughed at me. Called me a hippie, a tree-hugger, they made it seem i was wrong for these things and I accepted that.
A few years ago (2 1/2 exactly) my life sort of reset, i had the chance to start over and I wanted to take it but I was drowning in the aftermath of it. I was left at the mercy of whoever would take me in and help me and even though I tried I never seemed to find my footing and I stayed a Yes-man.
My life is still changing faster than I knew possible but I am done living just to survive; on New Years I made a resolution to be the person I have always wanted to be. To live a greener, healthier life, to spend my money to impact real change on this planet. It's been hard; right now I have $47 to my name and 'organic' is always more expensive. Yes I cheat. I have to to live, but I never expected this to be an over night change.
Over the course of this blog I will be reviewing and showcase the products, companies, and the everyday changes I make in my life to be the person I want to be. I already have a list of products to review!
In June I turn 20 and I want to open this new decade a new Tarina. Already I am happier with my life and it will only get better. So, please, come with me on this life changing journey. It'll be fun.
